Alaska's fish harvesting industry employs more than 32,000; salmon account for majority of jobs

November's Alaska Trends, published by the Alaska Department of Labor, highlights employment in Alaska's successful commercial fishing industry. Although exact employment numbers are difficult to get because most workers are self-employed, the Department estimates that 9,900 permit holders employ 22,000 crew members in Alaska. Average monthly jobs by species of fish in 2011 were:

• Salmon harvesting, 4,681 jobs or 58.1%
• Groundfish, 1,101 jobs or 13.7%
• Halibut, 1,034 jobs or 12.8%
• Crab, 487 jobs or 6%
• Sablefish, 480 jobs or 6%
• Miscellaneous species, 156 jobs or 1.9%
• Herrings, 121 jobs or 1.5%

The percentage of average monthly jobs by region in 2011 were:

• Southeast Alaska, 28.0%
• Aleutian-Pribilof Islands, 20.2%
• Southcentral Alaska, 19.3%
• Bristol Bay, 15.2%
• Kodiak, 9.4%
• Yukon Delta, 5.9%
• Northern, 1.6%
